There are so many things to see at the Knoxville Zoo, it’s hard to know where to start.
Fortunately, if you have at least one free day and don’t mind the enclosures or the smell, you don’t have to make tough decisions like: Should I see the pandas or the reptiles? The bears or the petting zoo? You can see it all, including many threatened or endangered species and the Bloomin’ Butterfly and Toadally Frogs exhibits.
Without a doubt, the most adorable animal you’ll encounter at the zoo right now is George, a chimpanzee born July 19. George and his mom, Daisy, are now on display for the public, though it’s up to Daisy to decide how long she wants to remain in the viewing area.
That’s just the beginning of your journey, however, and while red pandas, zebras and rhinos don’t look like anything you’ve encountered before (unless you’ve seen them at another zoo or were raised overseas), some of the animals you’ll meet are a tad more familiar. The big cats look like much larger, more dangerous versions of house cats, with big paws and twitching tails, the face of an African Wild Dog is startlingly similar to that of man’s best friend and zebras could pass as painted horses, with similar mannerisms and expressions. (Even though those animals look familiar, you definitely shouldn’t try to touch them.)
On your way out, make sure and visit the petting zoo. Kids and their grown-up counterparts will love the hands-on experience with goats, llamas and one friendly cow.
Tickets are $16.95 for adults and $12.95 for children ages 2 to 12. The zoo is open 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 637-5331 or visit www.knoxville-zoo.org for more information and directions.
