Did anyone catch the underlying meaning in the recent News Sentinel article, “UT rules Knox pay list,” concerning the top incomes in the state? No, I bet you didn’t because you think feminism is dead — at the least, a moot point in this “open-minded” country. But this article contains the undeniable truth that the sports industry, the state of Tennessee, and indeed the United States as a whole, is still sexist.

Pat Summitt is the head coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team, a team that since 1974 has had 983 wins and only 182 losses: Pat Summitt is the all-time most-winning coach in all of NCAA basketball history. Phil Fulmer, in contrast, is ranked 20th as a football head coach, and poor little Bruce Pearl’s record pales markedly in comparison to Summitt’s. Yet the stark, bold, bare fact is that both Fulmer and Pearl earn more than three times as much as Summitt. Fulmer makes more than four times as much — last year, Fulmer’s base income was $2.05 million, Pearl’s was $1.6 million and Summitt’s was $432,165.

Yes, yes, we all know the argument that people in the sports industry make too much money anyway, but that is not the point. Nor is the argument relevant in regard to how many millions of dollars each team brings into the state. For heaven’s sake, the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame is in Knoxville — I wonder why.

The discrepancy in income boils down to gender, folks, plain and simple, and this injustice should appall you, anger you or at the very least, bring your head out of the sand. Women don’t “tout” equal rights, and most of the time we don’t even try to change all the little sexist notions running around in your head, like “women are supposed to be the cleaners of houses and the willing images of male fantasy.”

Nope, first and foremost, the feminist has always wanted equal pay, and yet in 2007, 54 years after the “equal pay” law, women still earn only 77 cents on every dollar earned by men. And of course, you’re going to say that men and women do “different” work, so they should be paid different amounts, as if the Pat Summitt case is an anomaly. Think again: Women lawyers earn an average $200 less a week than male lawyers. Women doctors earn approximately $650 less a week than the average male doctor. Even in the food industry, women supervisors earn an average $100 less a week than their male supervising counterparts.

Obviously, we still haven’t gotten equal pay (let alone treatment), not even in such an incredibly talented, high profile world-shaker as Pat Summitt. Perhaps we should just pray to the Goddess.

What it boils down to is how much money each person and/or program draws into the University. Have you ever been to a Lady Vols game? If not, you can pick up a ticket at the box office the day of the game. Have you ever tried to get a ticket to a men's basketball game the day of? You are going to pay more than double the face value of a Lady Vols ticket if you are lucky enough to find one. There is a reason Thompson Boling Arena was renovated recently, because Bruce Pearl turned our men's program around and it is bringing in a lot more money than the University has ever seen when it comes to men's or women's hoops. As far as respect goes....the basketball floor is not named "The Pearl", its named "The Summit". I think respect for Pat Summit and her accomplishments far outweigh what Pearl has earned so far. But guess what, respect doesn't make the University any money. Sorry, not a gender issue here. It's purely financial...apples to oranges here. Have you compared Summitt's salary to other women's basketball coaches?
